A drink-driver from Ramsey has been banned from driving for two years and put on probation.

Student Owen Morgan Bevan failed a breathalyser test with a reading of 67 after police stopped him on the New Castletown Road in Douglas.

After pleading guilty in court, magistrates also ordered the 22-year-old student to retake his test at the end of the ban.

Prosecuting advocate Roger Kane told the court that police were on patrol in an unmarked vehicle on July 18 when they saw Bevan driving a white MG3 approaching the Quarterbridge roundabout.

Bevan’s car was said to have suddenly deviated causing the police to apply their brakes.

They subsequently stopped him and he was described as smelling of alcohol.

When asked if he had been drinking, he replied: ’Not this morning.’

After failing a roadside breathalyser test Bevan was taken to police headquarters where he failed a further test with the 67 reading. The legal limit is 35.

The court heard that he has no previous convictions.

A probation report said that Bevan, who lives at Lezayre Road, had almost completed a university course in mathematics and economics, and was also studying to work as a personal trainer.

The report said that he had personal issues which should not be aired in open court and had suffered from anxiety and depression.

The report recommended a 12-month probation order as a suitable sentence saying this would offer support to Bevan and could end earlier if everything went well.

Defence advocate David Clegg handed in letters of reference for his client as well as a letter of apology to the court from Bevan himself.

’He is keen to receive the support probation can offer,’ said the advocate. ’His mother is in court supporting him.’

Magistrates also ordered Bevan to pay £125 prosecution costs.
