A 53-year-old woman from Onchan has been banned from driving and fined £750 for drink-driving.

Yvonne Marie Efstathiou, of Hillcrest Grove, failed a breathalyser test with a reading of 46 - the legal limit is 35.

She pleaded guilty to the offence and was banned for 12 months by High Bailiff Jayne Hughes.

Prosecutor Rachael Braidwood told the court that Efstathiou was stopped by police on Glencrutchery Road in Douglas at 1.40am on April 6.

Police saw her driving her Land-Rover swerving in the road and travelling at excessive speed.

When they pulled her over she was said to be smelling of alcohol and she told officers that she had been drinking at a friends’ house.

She failed the roadside breathalyser test and was taken to police headquarters where she produced the 46 reading.

Defence advocate Jim Travers asked for credit to be given to his client for her guilty plea and the fact that she had no previous convictions.

’It is most unfortunate Ms Efstathiou found herself on the road,’ said the advocate.

’She had been to a friends and enjoyed some wine. She had not kept a proper check on the amount she had consumed and was looking to travel home with her partner. She made an error of judgement. The intended trip was a relatively short distance from Douglas to Onchan.

’I suggest we won’t see this lady before the court again. She has learnt a valuable lesson.’

Mrs Hughes told Efstathiou: ’You shouldn’t have taken the risk,’ and also ordered her to pay £125 prosecution costs.
