A drink-driver was caught by police after his car suffered a flat tyre in the early hours of the morning.

Charlie Harrison was this week fined £1,350 and banned from driving for two years for drink-driving.

Prosecuting advocate Roger Kane told the court that police came across the 24-year-old in Baldrine on October 18 at 5am.

He was said to have the hazard lights displayed on his Ford Fiesta as he tried to inflate a tyre.

Police said there was visible damage to the tyre and that Harrison was slurring his words and was unsteady on his feet.

He failed a roadside breathalyser test and was subsequently arrested.

At police headquarters he failed a further test with the reading of 68. The legal limit is 35.

When interviewed Harrison, who lives in Corrin’s Way, Peel, told police he had had a few drinks in Peel and driven towards Laxey at 2am.

He said he had then argued with his girlfriend and got a flat tyre after leaving.

He claimed he was not drunk but could not explain why he had blown over the limit on the intoxiliser.

The court heard that he has no previous convictions.

Defence advocate Paul Glover asked for credit to be given for his client’s immediate guilty plea and admissions made to the police.

Mr Glover handed in a reference from Harrison’s employer.

Magistrates also ordered him to pay £125 costs which he will pay, along with the fine, at a rate of £100 per month. He must also retake his test at the end of the ban.
