A teenage drink driver who led police on a high-speed chase through Douglas ended up flipping his car onto its roof.

Jason Craig Quayle, aged 19, was warned he could go to prison after he admitted a series of offences when he appeared before Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes on Thursday.

She adjourned sentencing to allow social inquiry reports to be prepared, but warned Quayle that custody was an option.

The court heard an off-duty police officer was at the Crosby Hotel on March 31 when he saw Quayle get into a Toyota Corolla and begin freewheeling it out of the car park.

At 1.55am he saw the Toyolta Corolla speeding in the North Quay and Douglas Head area. A police car was positioned at the bottom of Head Road in order to stop the car. But the officers were forced to take evasive action as the car sped towards them, mounting the kerb as the driver swerved to avoid the police car.

James Robinson, prosecuting, said the police gave chase as the Toyota topped speeds of 50mph on the Castletown Road, towards the Nunnery. They lost sight of the car before coming across it, on its roof, after hitting a hedge near the Heron and Brearley brewery.

Officers spotted two people running into the brewery grounds and Quayle, of Reayt Ny Chrink, Crosby, was later found by police dogs.

Although his passengers refused to name him, Quayle later admitted to being the driver. He said he had been given the car by a work colleague in March, in a swap deal.

A breath reading gave a measure of 59 - the legal limit is 35.

Quayle admitted drink driving, dangerous driving, two charges of driving without a licence and two of driving without insurance.

He was bailed to appear back in court on Thursaday, November 2.
