A Ramsey motorist has been banned from driving after admitting a charge of drink-driving.

Shane Joseph Byrne, of Lezayre Estate, admitted failing a breathalyser test with a reading of 41 - the legal limit is 35.

Byrne had been seen driving in the town after going into the Royal George pub, in the Market Place.

He was fined £800 and banned from driving for a year when he appeared before Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes for sentencing on Friday.

Prosecutor Roger Kane told the court how police received information on October 19 at 11.43pm that Byrne was driving near the Royal George having earlier been inside.

Byrne then approached police officers himself and asked why he was being sought.

He took them to his Hyundai, which was said to be poorly parked nearby with the engine warm.

Failed

He failed the breathalyser test.

And he was also found in possession of cocaine.

That charge was withdrawn after he agreed to work with Motiv8.

Defence advocate Deborah Myerscough said: ’Mr Byrne had some ongoing personal issues.

’He is going to continue to engage with Motiv8 to assist him with those issues.

’I don’t think you will see him before you again for this type of matter.’

Ms Myerscough went on to say that the driving ban would put Byrne’s job in jeopardy as he worked driving from site to site fitting security systems to buildings.

Mrs Hughes also ordered Byrne to retake his test at the end of the one-year motoring ban.

And he must pay £125 prosecution costs.
