A Glen Vine man has been fined £1,000 and banned from driving for two years for drink-driving on New Year’s Eve.

Lewis Dayle Malone, of Ballagarey Road, was stopped by police at 9.33pm on Strang Road in Douglas.

He failed a breathalyser test with a reading of 54 - the legal limit is 35.

Prosecuting advocate James Robinson told the court that police stopped Malone, who is 25, initially over concerns for this speed as he was driving a BMW.

He failed the roadside breathalyser test and was arrested and taken to police headquarters where he failed a further test with the 54 reading.

Defence advocate Ian Kermode said: ’Mr Malone was driving from a friend’s house to a shop in Douglas. He wishes to make it clear he was not speeding.

’He accepts he consumed a few alcoholic drinks prior to driving and his judgement was impaired.’

Mr Kermode went on to say that Malone was a logistics manager.

The advocate said that his client had passed his test eight years ago and only had one previous conviction relating to a tax disc.

Magistrates also ordered Malone to pay £125 prosecution costs and gave him two months to pay the fine and costs.

He must also retake his test at the end of the ban.
