A 33-year-old Douglas man has been fined £500 by Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes after admitting being drunk and disorderly.
Shawn Anthony Bartlett, of Marathon Road, was also banned from entering licensed premises and buying or being sold alcohol for six months. When he made an appearance in court on the same charge earlier, we reported how, on February 3 at 11.30pm, Bartlett was in the Bridge Inn pub on Douglas quay.
Bartlett was said to have approached two women who were dancing and got between them.
He was alleged to have put his fingers and thumbs down the back of each of the women’s jeans, but denied doing this in court.
The women said that they had pushed him away and he left.
He was later seen in an altercation with a man in the pub and again accused of putting his hands down a woman’s trousers, which he again denied.
Bartlett was asked to leave the pub by the designated official but as he was being escorted out he was said to be swearing and being abusive.
Police were called and Bartlett was arrested.
In a police interview he said he had a complete blackout from walking into the Bridge Inn pub.
CCTV footage showed him moving between groups of people and an altercation with another man.
Bartlett then said he could remember putting his arms around people but denied putting his hands down anyone’s trousers.
He handed in a basis of plea accepting his behaviour towards the designated official had been inappropriate but not accepting anything inappropriate towards any other witnesses.
Defending Bartlett in court his advocate David Reynolds said: ’Mr Bartlett tells me he started drinking around 2.30pm on the day of the incident.
’He tells me he drank around nine pints of Guinness up until midnight.
’He says he fully recollects what had gone on that evening.
’Since the incident has been reported it has caused him a certain amount of stress.
’He is receiving benefits as he is currently unable to work. He is waiting for a knee operation.
’He doesn’t have any indication of the operation date or when he can work again.’
Mrs Hughes quoted a probation report which said that Bartlett had an ’unhealthy relationship with alcohol’.
He was also ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs.
