An 85-year-old woman from Douglas has been fined £500 and had her driving licence endorsed with six penalty points.

Cathleen Rowe, of Cronk Drean, did not attend court but sent a postal admission to an offence of driving without due care or attention.

Prosecutor James Robinson told the court how, on December 2 at 3.53pm, Rowe was driving a Honda Jazz from South Quay Road in Douglas to the Old Castletown Road.

A second vehicle, a Renault Clio, was coming in the opposite direction as she approached the roundabout.

As Rowe entered the roundabout to turn right she collided with the Clio.

She told police, ’I only looked right at the roundabout, what’s the point in looking anywhere else.’

Rowe said that she had believed that it had been her right of way.

In her postal admission sent to the magistrates’ court Rowe said: ’I did make a mistake at the roundabout. I apologise for the trouble caused. I will never again make the mistake of cutting across any roundabout in future.’

Rowe was also ordered to pay £50 prosecution costs and was given 28 days to pay the full fine and costs.
