Police identified a driver whose car had hit a Manx Electric Railway pole in Onchan as the bumper - including the car’s registration number - was left at the scene.

Darren Noel Dooley, of Oak Avenue, Douglas, was fined £400 by magistrates for driving without insurance.

The 27-year-old initially pleaded not guilty to the offence but changed his plea on Thursday.

A second charge of failing to produce insurance was withdrawn.

The court heard how, on December 8, police were called to the scene of an accident at King Edward Road in Onchan.

The accident involved Dooley’s car hitting a Manx Electric Railway pole but had not been reported and he had left the scene.

However, Dooley left behind the bumper of his car which had the number registration on it.

Police called at his house and he admitted being the driver saying he skidded and struck the pole.

He was given five days to produce his insurance documents.

On December 20, Dooley went to police headquarters and left an insurance certificate which he said covered him.

But police found that the certificate covered him for another vehicle.

The court heard that he has seven points on his licence previously.

Defending Dooley in court his advocate Ian Kermode said that it had been a genuine mistake and that his client thought the insurance certificate covered him.

Dooley had his licence endorsed with four penalty points. He was also ordered to pay £200 prosecution costs.
