An elderly woman has died following a flat fire in Peel - and her husband is in a serious condition in hospital.

The fire, which broke out in a bedroom of the flat on Battery Road, is still under investigation but its cause is not being treated as suspicious.

A joint police and fire investigation was launched following the tragedy, which took place overnight on Wednesday/Thursday last week.

Police confirmed that a 91-year-old woman had died following the fire and her husband was in a serious condition in hospital.

The Coroner of Inquests has been informed.

A police spokesman said: ’It is with great sadness the police can confirm that a 91-year-old female has died as a result of this incident.

’Additionally, a male from the same property is in a serious condition at Noble’s Hospital receiving treatment.’

Police passed their condolences to the family and requested they are ’afforded privacy at this difficult time’.

They urged the public to refrain from speculating on this incident while the police and fire investigation is continuing.
