A 36-year-old Douglas man has been fined £150 for being found drunk in a public place.

James George Hewitt, of Woodburn Square, admitted the offence and was also ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs.

Prosecuting advocate Hazel Carroon told the court how police were called to Woodburn Square on March 24 at 7.30pm.

Paramedics had initially attended but Hewitt was said to have become volatile.

When police arrived the paramedics had left but Hewitt was outside and said to be unsteady on his feet and unable to converse with officers.

He was described as agitated and was eventually arrested after concerns over his ability to look after himself because of his intoxication.

Defence advocate Kate Alexander said that the prosecution facts were accepted.

The advocate said: ’Mr Hewitt lives a solitary existence.

’He goes out for shopping and to collect benefits.

’The gardens where he usually goes were closed and he had recently suffered the death of a pet.

’He was disappointed he was arrested rather than police just bringing him home.’

Ms Alexander added that Hewitt was unable to work due to mental health problems.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes ordered Hewitt to pay the fine and costs at a rate of £10 per week, deducted from benefits.
