Twenty firefighters were called out to deal with a major blaze at an historic Manx home.

Crews from Port Erin, Castletown and Douglas spent five hours dealing with the fire at Kentraugh, Gansey.

Mobilised at just after 1.45pm yesterday (Thursday) following a 999 call, they arriving at the scene to find developing fire was located in both the basement and ground floor.

The officer in charge of the first appliance swiftly confirmed that all occupants were accounted for.

There was extensive smoke logging throughout the basement, ground, first and second floors.

Access was difficult due to poor visibility.

Twenty firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were deployed to extinguish the fire using jets and high-pressure hose reels.

The property, the historic home of the Qualtraugh and the Gawne families, was then vented using three positive pressure fans.

Crews remained in attendance for five hours.

The fire service praised the swift actions of the occupants who raised the alarm, calling the emergency services.
