Fire crews from Laxey and Douglas were called to deal with a house fire on the Ballacannell estate in Laxey late on Saturday night.

Four breathing apparatus wearers with high-pressure hose reels and thermal image cameras promptly had the fire under control which was confined to a first-floor bedroom. Crews remained in attendance for approximately an hour checking for hot spots and clearing the property of smoke.

As they were returning to station they came across a single-vehicle road traffic collision at South Cape corner. Already in attendance was an off-duty fire officer who lives near the scene of the crash. He had secured the scene and assisted the sole occupants release by peeling away the damaged front windscreen.

Crews made the vehicle safe by isolating the battery and paramedics treated the driver for minor injuries.

Also on Saturday evening, Peel crews were mobilised to a boiler fire at a property on the Poortown Road.

On arrival they quickly isolated the electrical supply to the boiler and cleared the room of smoke.
