Emergency services are tackling a fire in the waste pit at the the Energy from Waste Plant on Richmond Hill.

Two crews from Douglas fire station are at the scene.

According to a statement from the government, drivers are being asked to ’avoid the area if they can’.

The blaze is under control but has generated a large amount of smoke.

Crews are expected to stay on site for up to two hours to ensure the fire is fully extinguished.

Further checks will then be made to confirm no reignition.

The government says access to the Energy from Waste plant is currently suspended.

The plant expects to be open to accept waste on Monday morning.
