A discarded cigarette is believed to have caused a shack fire in the White Beach area, south of Niarbyl last night.

Police said last night: 'This evening all emergency services were called to the area of Niarbyl following a unoccupied hut catching fire. This was started by a discarded cigarette. 'Although this appears to have been a genuine accident this has taken up a lot of resources which may have been needed elsewhere. Thankfully nobody was hurt.'We have beautiful coastlines on this island, unfortunately some of it is now ruined by someone's reckless actions.'Please bear in mind when having barbecues or having coastal walks and smoking - make sure your fires and cigarettes are properly put out. 'With the current hot weather and dry countryside there is more chance of fires starting and spreading. 'We're asking the public to avoid the area.'Stay safe, be careful everyone and think of your surroundings.'
