Firefighters underlined the importance of fire alarms and closed doors after a fire in Douglas last night.
They were called to Derby Road after the occupants of a house smelt burning shortly before the alarm operated.
They then closed the doors to help to contain a fire.
The fire involved a tumble dryer in the basement of the house.
Crews wearing breathing apparatus entered and quickly isolated and extinguished the dryer.
’Due to all doors being closed, smoke spread was confined to the basement,’ a fire service spokesman said.
Crews cleared the basement of smoke and were there for about an hour.
’In this instance a combination of working smoke alarms and closed doors gave early warning allowing the occupants to escape and prevent additional damage to the property,’ a fire service spokesman said.
