Two people were rescued from a fire at their Port Erin home this morning.
Crews from Rushen and Castletown rushed to Ballakilley Close at about 12.30am.
Firefighters used a ladder to rescue the two occupants from a first floor bedroom. The residents had been woken by the property’s smoke alarm.
Ambulance crews then treated them for smoke inhalation and they were taken to Noble’s Hospital for a check up and were later discharged.
Firefighters then entered the property and extinguished a fire in the lounge using a hose reel.
Crews used a thermal imaging camera to check for hot spots and then ventilated the smoke logged property using a positive pressure ventilation fan.
The fire is believed to have been started by a discarded cigarette.
A fire service spokesperson said: ’The outcome of this incident could have ended very differently if the property hadn’t been fitted with working smoke alarms. The activation of the alarm gave the occupants an early warning of the fire and has undoubtedly saved their lives on this occasion.
’Smoke alarms that are properly installed and maintained play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries. If there is a fire in your home, smoke spreads fast and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out.’
