A fisherman has been fined £1,341 after crashing his motorbike.
Karl Andrew Allanson suffered a fractured collar bone, three fractured ribs, and a deflated lung as a result of the accident.
The 36-year-old admitted careless driving, having no insurance, having no driving licence, and having no vehicle licence.
Deputy High Bailiff Chris Arrowsmith also endorsed his licence with nine penalty points and ordered him to pay £50 prosecution costs.
Prosecuting advocate Rachael Braidwood told the court how, on October 6 last year, Allanson was riding a Yamaha YZF R125 motorcycle on Braaid Road heading towards Douglas.
He lost control of the bike on a corner, hitting a grass bank.
Members of the public assisted as Allanson, who lives in Factory Lane, Peel, was injured.
Police later found out that his licence had expired and the bike was not insured.
The court heard that he has convictions in the UK for driving without insurance in 2013 and 2016.
Defence advocate Stephen Wood pointed out that it had been four years since his client’s last offence and asked for credit to be given for his guilty pleas.
’The road conditions were wet,’ said the advocate. ’He rounded the corner and the front tyre went into a patch of water. There was a momentary loss of control and he panicked.’
Mr Wood said that Allanson had taken a pragmatic approach and accepted his driving fell below standard.
He continued: ’Unfortunately he had purchased the bike recently from a friend and had not checked that insurance he had on another bike, had been extended to cover this one.
’He accepts he didn’t get the tax disc sorted. He accepts his previous convictions don’t help him.’
Mr Wood said that Allanson had been receiving treatment for his injuries for almost a year and had only recently returned to work.
Mr Arrowsmith told Allanson: ’You came extremely close to being disqualified today.’
He fined him £350 for careless driving, £600 for having no insurance, £250 for having no vehicle licence, £100 for having no driving licence, and £41 for the unpaid tax.
He will pay the fines and costs at a rate of £10 per week.
