A total of 40 firefighters tackled a large blaze at Glen Helen, which took six hours to extinguish.

Fire crews from Peel, Kirk Michael and Douglas extinguished flames at the Swiss Chalet in the west of the island early this morning.

The call came at 1.25am with occupants evacuating the premises before crews arrived as they had been alerted by smoke alarms. No one was injured.

Forty firefighters - 14 of which wore breathing apparatuses - fought the flames from inside and outside of the building.

Once extinguished, crews used ladders and various equipment to cut away bits of the roof to check for hot spots using thermal imaging cameras.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Station officer, Matt Tyrer, said: ’Smoke alarms save lives. Smoke alarms that are properly installed and maintained play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries.

’If there is a fire in your home, smoke spreads fast and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out.’

A total of five fire appliances attended the scene along with one Aerial Ladder Platform (ALP), one Water bowser and one pinzgauer.
