A fisherman has been put on probation for refusing to leave a bar after putting £800 in a gambling machine.
Lee Scott, 40, of Murrays Road, Douglas, admitted being drunk and disorderly and was made the subject of a nine-month probation order.
Scott abused staff at the Barbary Coast on a Sunday afternoon and squared up to bar staff.
Prosecutor Rachael Braidwood told the court how, on November 18 at 5pm, police were called to the bar on North Quay after a report of a man refusing to leave the premises.
The licensee said that he had been called into the bar by staff when Scott refused to leave.
He was asked to finish his drink and leave but shouted and swore.
When police arrived they reiterated the request but Scott continued to be rude to the licensee.
He was subsequently arrested but his anger continued in police custody where Pava spray had to be used to restrain him.
The court heard that Scott had a previous conviction in October for provoking behaviour.
Defence advocate David Clegg said: ’Mr Scott is ashamed of his behaviour. He is not having a good year. He has held his hands up and asked me to apologise to all concerned.
’At the time, in his mind, he didn’t believe he was behaving unreasonably, but he does accept he simply had too much to drink.’
A probation report said that Scott said he was out the night before the incident and had continued drinking throughout the next day.
He told probation that he had significant gambling and alcohol addictions and that he would welcome a licensing ban which would limit his access to gaming machines.
Scott said that, at the time, he had believed he was being asked to leave the pub so that staff could play the machine, knowing that he had put £800 into it.
Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes banned Scott from entering licensed premises, and purchasing or being sold alcohol for nine months, and also ordered that he pay £125 prosecution costs.
