Fire crews responded to a structure fire that contained hazardous materials at Freeport in Ballasalla.

Members from Castletown and Douglas fire and rescue teams received a call from site managers, who confirmed that the fire involved dangerous chemicals, at 3.35pm yesterday (Monday).

A chemical incident unit and hazardous materials officer attended the site.

Station Officer Tony Duncan said: ’The fire had been extinguished promptly by operatives within the processing plant but because of the risk of a further chemical reaction there was a strong possibility that the fire could reignite.

’A safe system of work was agreed between subject matter experts on scene and officers from the fire service.

’Operatives from the factory and fire service personnel wearing personal protective equipment worked together to make safe and remove the hazardous materials from the unit.’

Crews remained at the scene for approximately two hours to ensure that conditions were stabilised.
