A hotel worker has been fined for being drunk and disorderly outside the Courthouse bar, in Douglas.

Harry Michael Craig, aged 24, of Loch Promenade, Douglas, was fined £300 and ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes told Craig: ’You are perhaps fortunate not to be charged with a more serious offence.

’You should quite rightly be ashamed of yourself, particularly as someone who works on licensed premises.’

Prosecutor Barry Swain told the court that Craig was outside the Courthouse bar on Athol Street on August 18 at 3.20am.

The court heard that he was seen by door staff arguing with a taxi driver. The door staff tried to intervene as the argument was said to have become heated.

They took Craig by the arm but he then became abusive towards them.

The staff told him to leave the area but Craig refused then swung his arm at one of the bouncers in an attempt to punch him but didn’t make contact.

He was subsequently put on the ground while police were called who then arrested him.

Defence advocate Paul Glover asked for credit to be given to his client for the facts that he has no previous convictions and his guilty plea.

’Mr Craig informs me that he is incredibly remorseful for the offence. He lives in the Ellan Vannin Hotel and works there. He also works in 1886 bar.’

Mr Glover went on to say that any licensing ban would have a serious impact upon Craig’s employment.

’He informs me he has learned a very valuable lesson, one he should have already known,’ said the advocate.

’He wishes to apologise to the doormen and taxi driver.’

Mrs Hughes spared Craig any licensing ban.
