A crew wearing breathing apparatus escorted the occupant from the building and paramedics treated him on the scene for smoke inhalation. He was then transferred to hospital for further checks.
The fire was on the first floor which was quickly extinguished with a hose reel and then crews ventilated the property with a positive pressure fan.
None of the smoke detectors fitted in the property worked.
A fire service spokesperson added: ‘We keep stressing the importance of having working smoke alarms, but not all persons are in a position to test them, so if you have family or friends perhaps not as nimble as yourself, check they have smoke alarms and that they work next time you visit please.’
