A teenager from Port St Mary has been fined £50 by magistates and ordered to pay £90 compensation after his karate kick broke an ornamental plant pot.

Joseph Neil Devereau, of Lewthwaites Way, admitted an offence property damage and was also ordered to pay £50 prosecution costs.

Prosecutor James Robinson told the court how, at 11.08pm on August 25, Devereau was with friends in Station Road in Port Erin, near the railway station.

He crossed the road and karate kicked an ornamental bay tree outside Port Erin chippy, causing it to fall over.

Devereau, aged 19, was later spoken to by police and shown CCTV footage of the incident.

He admitted the offence and made no reply after caution.

The damaged pot was valued at £60 with compost costing £30.

The court heard that Devereau had no previous convictions, only a caution in May for criminal damage.

Mr Robinson asked the court to consider a licensing ban as Devereau had been intoxicated on both occasions.

Defence advocate Winston Taylor said: ’On the day in question Mr Devereau had been out with friends at the Haven [pub] in Port Erin.

’He confirms he was intoxicated and said he did karate kick the tree but he wasn’t aware the pot had broken.

’He was informed by a friend the next day and said he offered to pay for it but heard nothing back.

’When police attended his home he informed them he was responsible and identified himself on CCTV footage. He accepts his actions were reckless.’

Devereau was banned from buying or being sold alcohol for three months.

He was spared a ban on entering licensed premises as he was said to work in the restaurant trade.
