A 46-year-old shoplifter was this week handed a suspended sentence after stealing perfume worth £257 from Boots chemist.

Kathryn Kelly, of Prince’s Avenue, Douglas, admitted the theft and was also ordered to pay that amount in compensation to the store.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes sentenced Kelly to one month in custody, suspended for two years.

Prosecutor Roger Kane told the court how Kelly was seen on CCTV footage from Boots putting three bottles of perfume into her bag then leave without paying on May 13.

She was arrested at her home and told police: ’It’s not here, it’s gone. I’ve gone shoplifting again, I’m sorry.’

During a police interview Kelly said she was unable to remember her actions but had woken up on May 14 and found the perfume.

She said she had retraced her steps to Boots and intended to return the items but then had a panic attack. She said she could not remember what she had done with the perfume after that.

The court heard that Kelly is already subject to a suspended sentence imposed on May 16 after she took £700 from two TT fans for accommodation she never provided.

However, this latest offence took place before the suspended sentence was imposed so it did not put her in breach of it.

Mrs Hughes also ordered Kelly to pay £125 prosecution costs.

She will pay the compensation and costs at a rate of £15 per week, deducted from benefits.
