A Castletown man who was jailed for trying to rob a chemist at knifepoint has had his sentence extended after admitting five offences.

We reported in Tuesday’s Examiner that Paul Sunday Akinmurele, aged 45, of James Road, was jailed for two and a half years at the Court of General Gaol Delivery for attempted robbery.

He appeared in court again on Tuesday. Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes added 20 weeks to his sentence for provoking behaviour, being drunk and disorderly, possessing a bladed article in a public place and three counts of criminal damage.

Prosecutor Rachael Braidwood told the court that the provoking behaviour offence had occurred on July 14 when Akinmurele walked into a house in Castletown.

Two men were present at the time and had left the door unlocked but closed.

Akinmurele began shouting at one of the men but the second man then led him outside.

He was said to be still shouting and swearing when the first man also came outside.

Akinmurele then confronted the man and the pair ended up wrestling on the ground.

When interviewed by police Akinmurele said he had heard a scream in the house and that the door was open so he went inside. He said once inside he was racially abused.

The criminal damage offences were said to have taken place on September 1 and relate to a police van and cell. He was also found in possession of a knife on that date and charged with being drunk and disorderly.

Defence advocate Paul Glover quoted a doctor’s report which said that Akinmurele struggled to control his emotions.

The advocate said: ’Mr Akinmurele will engage with any treatment. He is going to put his time in custody to very good use.

’He isn’t going to be sitting in Jurby twiddling his thumbs, he is going to be working hard.’
