Fire crews this morning were called to rescue a person from the Laxey river.
At 8.10am, crews from Laxey fire station, a specialist water rescue team from Douglas fire station along with the duty officer were mobilised by the emergency services joint control room to reports of a person in distress in the river near Laxey glen gardens.
A fire crew spokesman said: ’On arrival the officer in charge of the first appliance assessed the situation and made contact with the casualty.
’Due to the dangers presented by the fast moving water the water rescue team, wearing specialist personal protective equipment setup a safe system of work to extricate the casualty from the water ascending a 10ft bank using line rescue equipment.
’The casualty was passed to the excellent care of our colleagues in the Isle of Man Ambulance service.’
The spokesman added: ’The fire service would remind the public not to drive or wade into moving water if at all possible, especially if it is fast flowing. Moving flood water can sweep you off your feet if it is only a few inches deep.’
Crews were on the scene for about an hour.
