Drivers are being warned to get their lights checked and make sure their cars are fit for the road.

Police have been continuing their winter lighting campaign with checks carried out in the south of the island.

Twenty vehicles were stopped on Thursday with a total of 31 defects being detected. ’We will be out in force again so please ensure your vehicles are fit for the road,’ a roads policing unit spokesman said.

Meanwhile, a driver was handed three penalty points and a £120 fine for driving without due care after failing to de-mist their windscreens.

All windows were so fogged there was zero visibility - with the added aggravating factor it was in the hours of darkness, the police said.

’Please take an extra five minutes to de-mist or de-ice your windscreens to avoid a collision and points and a fine on your licence,’ said the spokesman.
