A man has been handed a suspended prison sentence after admitting burglary with intent to steal from a Chinese takeaway in Pulrose.

Anthony John Richard Lyons, whose address was given as the Isle of Man prison, admitted burglary with intent to steal at Food Paradise in Alder Road, Douglas on January 29.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes sentenced Lyons, aged 31, to 12 weeks in custody suspended for two years.

Lyons is already serving a 16 week sentence imposed in March for thefts from Boots, Superdrug and Dealz and also an attempted theft from JD Sports, which were committed while he was already subject to another suspended sentence.

Defence advocate Paul Glover handed in a ’heartfelt’ letter from his client in which Lyons said that custody had been an ’eye opener’ and had not been easy for him.

Mr Glover said that Lyons’ had become a father two weeks ago.

’He realises he does need to grow up and now has even greater motivation to stop his offending.

’He says his head is now clear and he is working with the Drug and Alcohol Team and mental health services.’

Mr Glover went on to say that Lyons was 10 days from release and was not someone who enjoyed custody.

Damage

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said that this had been a burglary with intent rather than Lyons having entered and stolen items.

Damage was caused with a hammer and a first-aid kit was said to have been left on waste ground.

Mrs Hughes said that the burglary pre-dated the offence which Lyons was in jail for.

She said that had this incident been dealt with in court at the same time it would have resulted in a suspended sentence as well.
