A 25-year-old Douglas man has admitted having cannabis sent to him in the post.

Stephen Graham Whittaker, of Princes Road, also breached a community service order by failing to attend work groups.

He will be sentenced for both offences on March 24 after a probation report has been completed.

Prosecuting advocate Hazel Carroon told the court that police were called to the Post Office sorting office on October 15 after a suspicious package was identified.

It was addressed to Whittaker and found to contain 6.8 grams of cannabis worth £136 as well as 15 bags of sweets and tubs of oil.

He was arrested at his home and when interviewed gave ’no comment’ responses to most questions.

He was then shown CCTV footage of him making enquiries about the parcel at a post office. He initially denied the video showed him but then admitted it was him and said the drug was for personal use.

Ms Carroon said the police statements did not confirm whether the sweets and oil were infused with cannabis.

The prosecutor said Whittaker had also been sentenced to 70 hours’ community service imposed in July 2019 for cannabis possession and driving offences but had failed to attend three work groups as well as a meeting with probation.

He was said to have so far completed 28 hours of the 70 and that probation services had deemed him very unlikely to comply with the order.

Defence advocate Paul Rodgers asked for a probation report be compiled before sentencing.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes ordered that the report consider all sentencing options and that further information be obtained regarding the sweets and oil.

Bail was granted in the sum of £500.
