A man who broke his quarantine and went to two different pubs on two separate days, has been jailed for six weeks.

Paul Stephen Dowd, 64, of Demense Road, Douglas, pleaded guilty when he appeared at Douglas Courthouse on Wednesday.

The court heard that on July 30, Dowd had returned to the island via the airport where he was told that he was required to isolate for 14 days.

He also signed a document in which he agreed to reside and remain at his address from Saturday August 1 until Saturday August 15.

On Friday 7 August at about 7.45pm, he left his address and went to a convenience store on Windsor Road to buy food, he then walked to the Rosemount public house where he watched a football match on TV and drank two pints. At 10pm, he left and walked home.

The next day at about 8.45pm, he boarded the number 3 bus to Onchan before going into the Manx Arms public house. He stayed there until about 10.30pm when he then got the bus home.

Dowd posted on Facebook: ’I’ve been out stuff ’em good night all stay safe xx.’

At 5.40pm on Tuesday August 11, Dowd was arrested for breaching the Covid-19 regulations by failing to self-isolate.

In reply to caution he said: ’I’ve been out yes as I have been in and my landlord has been buying me food.’

During a police interview he said he had decided to leave his home in order to buy food as his landlord was not able to got, he also said he was bored.

Dowd said he went to the Rosemount to watch the football. He told officers he was also ’bored’ on August 8 so went to see his friend go to play music at the Manx Arms.

In response to being charged, Dowd said: ’I’ll just plead guilty as that’s what I did.’

A police spokesman said: ’People following the rules is the best defence we have against the Covid virus. Please follow them to keep our island safe and if you have concerns about anybody not isolating ring 686262.’
