A man burgled a house and assaulted a man at a bus stop during a four-day drink and drugs binge, a court has heard.

Alistair John Cowin, of Tynwald Street, in Douglas, admitted assault causing bodily harm, burgling a house in Oak Avenue and possessing cannabis.

The 34-year-old, who said he could not remember the incidents, was committed to appear at the Court of General Gaol Delivery on May 14.

Prosecutor Michael Jelski told the court how, on January 21 at 6.45pm, the victim of the assault was waiting at a bus stop on Peel Road in Douglas.

Cowin approached with another man and a woman and the man asked the victim for a cigarette.

The victim said he didn’t have one but Cowin was then said to have started rifling through the man’s pockets.

He pulled away from Cowin but Cowin then raised a glass he had in his hand threatened to hit him with it.

Cowin then hit the man in the head and followed this up by punching him three or four times in the head.

He then walked away from his victim telling him it wouldn’t have happened if he hadn’t been so ’stingy’.

The bleeding victim got on a bus and was offered First Aid by the driver.

Cowin then went on to burgle a house in Oak Avenue in Pulrose later that same evening taking items of an unknown value.

When interviewed by police Cowin said he couldn’t remember anything because he had been drinking and taking drugs for four days.

He said that he had been walking all over Douglas for four days but when he woke up on January 22 he had a bad feeling about the night before.

The assault victim was said to have suffered slight facial bruising and swelling with a small cut to his head.

Defence advocate Stephen Wood said that the injuries were not as significant as some that have come before the court and that the glass had not smashed when Cowin had struck the man in the head with it.

Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes declined jurisdiction saying that she did not feel her sentencing powers were sufficient.

Cowin was remanded in custody.
