A man has denied benefit fraud totalling almost £70,000.
Robert Graham Moffitt, of Hillside Avenue, in Douglas, pleaded not guilty to 12 counts of making a false representation to obtain a benefit when he appeared before Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes on Tuesday. The case will be dealt with by a higher court.
The court heard that Mr Moffitt, aged 63, is accused of claiming Job Seeker’s Allowance from April 2012 to October 2017 while failing to declare that his wife was receiving a pension from the Dublin District Milk Board.
Prosecutor Hazel Carroon said that the claim was fraudulent from the outside and had lasted for more than five years.
Ms Carroon said that the case should go to the Court of General Gaol Delivery.
Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes agreed with the advocate, ruling that summary court powers would not be sufficient should Mr Moffitt be found guilty and sentenced.
Committal proceedings will take place on November 13.
Mr Moffitt was granted bail in the sum of £500.
