A 54-year-old labourer has been fined £125 for being found drunk in a public place.

Simon Morris was seen lying on the ground near to the Ginger Hall pub.

Prosecuting advocate Rebecca Cubbon told the court how a member of the public called the police at 1.44am on October 10.

They reported that a man was lying half on the pavement and half on the road about 100 metres from the pub in Sulby.

Police arrived and found Morris, who lives in Sulby, sitting on the pavement wearing no shoes.

He told police he had fallen off the curb and banged his head.

An ambulance arrived to take him to hospital but Morris refused treatment and was subsequently arrested.

In court he pleaded guilty to being found drunk in a public place.

The court heard that he is currently subject to a community service order and a probation order, imposed in April 2021 for drink-driving.

Defence advocate Paul Glover said: ’Mr Morris was at the Ginger Hall that evening and was using his bank card.

’He sees that he had about eight pints in around four and a half hours and accepts being drunk. He had hit his head which may explain some of his behaviour.

’It is a fairly twisting and winding road which doesn’t have the best lighting.’

Deputy High Bailiff James Brooks also ordered Morris to pay £125 prosecution costs which he will pay, along with the fine, at a rate of £25 per week.

l Kirsty May Martin, aged 18, of Lag Birragh Drive, Onchan, has appeared in court charged with careless driving, having no insurance, and having no driving licence.

The case was adjourned until November 11 at the request of defence advocate Jane Gray who said that this was her client’s first appearance and asked for time to make further enquiries. The offences are alleged to have been committed on May 9.
