A man has been fined and banned from buying alcohol for being a drunk ’nuisance’ at a takeaway.

Police were called to the Marmaris takeaway, in Castlemona Avenue, Douglas, twice in one night after Maris Darzins refused to leave.

Darzins, aged 37, of Palace Terrace, Douglas, admitted being found drunk in a public place.

Prosecutor Rebecca Cubbon told the court that police were called to the takeaway on June 28 and found Darzins stood at the entrance refusing to leave.

He eventually walked off towards the promenade and police went back to their vehicle.

Officers then saw Darzins heading back to the area, and he was again told the leave.

Darzins left and police drove away but later that same evening they were called back to Marmaris and found him there yet again talking to staff and appearing to be even more intoxicated. He was subsequently arrested .

Advocate Kate Alexander said the prosecution facts were accepted and asked for credit to be given for her client’s guilty plea.

’Mr Darzins has indicated that he was waiting for a taxi but the taxi disappeared while he was waiting for food. We would ask for it to be noted that, while he was a nuisance, he wasn’t aggressive.’

Ms Alexander asked for Darzins to be spared a ban from entering licensed premises as he worked for the Steam Packet and lived at a hotel.

Magistrates fined Darzins £100 and banned him from purchasing or being sold alcohol for six months but not from entering licensed premises.

He was also ordered to pay prosecution costs of £125.
