A man who punched his then partner in the face and pushed a female police officer to the ground has been jailed.

John Anthony Green, of Stanley Mount, Ramsey, had to be restrained using Pava spray.

Green, aged 44, admitted charges of police assault, provoking behaviour and property damage and was jailed for 14 weeks.

Green was said to have punched his then-partner in the face after she had twice punched him to the back of the head on February 7.

He also damaged a gate by slamming it at Bircham Avenue Close in Ramsey.

Green then pushed a police woman to the ground in the Co-op car park in Christian Street on the same day and threatened to break her arm before police used Pava spray to restrain him.

Advocate Paul Glover said: ’It is accepted alcohol is a strong catalyst in this matter.

’He has realised his relationship with his now ex-partner was somewhat toxic.

’He has taken the soul searching decision to end the relationship and is dedicated to addressing his relationship with alcohol.

’He is not able to find work at present which has left him with ample time to drink heavily. But he wants to improve his work prospects. He is a hardworking man.’

He added: ’A large contributing factor was the concoction of medication and alcohol.’

Mr Glover said that a probation report had assessed his client as a medium risk of reoffending and of harm to the public.

’However, I would submit that would significantly drop if he gets back in employment and addresses his alcohol consumption,’ said the advocate.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said that the offences were committed while Green was subject to a binding order imposed in November in relation to another incident with the same woman.

Mrs Hughes told Green: ’The offence involves you being grossly intoxicated and in a toxic relationship but that does not excuse an assault on a police officer.

’A clear message needs to go out to anyone who assaults a police officer when they are intoxicated.’

Green was also banned from entering licensed premises, and purchasing or being sold alcohol for six months.
