A 32-year-old man has been jailed for 12 weeks after he damaged a car’s wing mirror.

Anthony John Richard Lyons, of Spring Valley Road, Douglas, was already subject to a probation order.

He breached it with the new offence.

Magistrates sentenced him to four weeks in custody for property damage and revoked his probation order and sentenced him to an additional eight weeks in place of that.

Prosecuting advocate James Robinson told the court that Lyons was at Spring Valley Gardens in Douglas on February 17 at 5.04pm.

He approached a black Mercedes, spat at it and then punched the wing mirror, bending it backwards before walking off.

The owner reported the damage the following day and provided dashcam footage to the police, which had captured the incident and identified Lyons.

Lyons was arrested and when interviewed told police he was unaware of causing any damage but said that he had been on a drinking binge since being released from a 16-week prison sentence on February 14.

The court heard that he had also been sentenced to a 12-month probation order in October for various offences.

After he was released from prison on February 14 Lyons was said to have told probation he saw no point in engaging with them unless they could find him somewhere to live and give him a bus pass.

Lyons said that he wanted to work but was unable to due to nerve damage.

Defence advocate David Clegg said that his client was signed off long term and was claiming incapacity benefit so he would be incapable of doing community service.

Mr Clegg said that Lyons had not been in any further trouble since February and asked that a new probation order be imposed.

However, magistrates chair Julie Maddrell told Lyons: ‘You have a dreadful record. It appears every type of sentence has been tried. In light of your record we do not have any faith you would take assistance.’
