A 54-year-old man saw in the New Year in a police cell after verbally abusing a barmaid and being thrown out of a pub on New Year’s Eve.
He was fined £475 when he appeared before magistrates for sentencing last week.
Tobin swore at a barmaid and was said to have been so abusive the woman was in tears after he complained about his glass.
Prosecuting advocate James Robinson told the court that police were called to the pub at 10.15pm after a report of a man refusing to leave.
When officers arrived Tobin was outside arguing with the landlord.
The landlord told police that there had been a wedding reception at the pub and Tobin’s behaviour had deteriorated.
He was said to have been agitated over the size of his glass which had resulted in him abusing the barmaid.
He was asked to leave but refused, only leaving after he was told police had been called.
Defence advocate Paul Rodgers said: ’Mr Tobin accepts he was in the wrong.
’He is highly embarrassed and spent 10 hours in custody.
’He ordered gin and it came in a pint glass.
’He wasn’t happy and accepts he used the ’F’ word and went too far. It was only a short incident.’
Magistrates also ordered Tobin to pay £125 prosecution costs.
