A 28-year-old man from Anagh Coar has been fined £350 after swearing at a shop assistant who refused to sell him alcohol.

Nathan Alexander Orme admitted being drunk and disorderly and was also banned from buying or being sold alcohol for six months by High Bailiff Jayne Hughes.

Prosecuting advocate Hazel Carroon told the court that police were called to Spar in Anagh Road, Douglas on September 23.

A staff member said that Orme had ’staggered’ into the shop at 4.30pm and tried to buy alcohol.

She refused to sell it to him due to his condition and Orme then swore at her and said: ’You’ve got a vendetta against me.’

He left the shop but the woman said that he later threatened her outside, something which Orme denied doing.

He was later arrested and said to be smelling of alcohol and slurring his words.

At police headquarters when interviewed Orme told police: ’I was a bit gobby in the shop.

’If I could give a written apology I would do it now.’

Defence advocate Stephen Wood entered a basis of plea in which Orme admitted his actions in the shop but denied any threats of violence or comments made outside.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said that it would not make a material difference to the sentence and agreed to sentence Orme on the basis of plea he put forward.

Mr Wood said that his client was working well with the Drug and Alcohol Team after being given a probation order in May.

The advocate said that, on the day in question, personal difficulties arose and Orme had chosen to consume alcohol.

Mr Wood asked that his client be spared a ban on entering licensed premises.

High Bailiff Mrs Hughes also ordered him to pay £125 prosecution costs, which he will pay along with the fine at a rate of £15 per week deducted from benefits.
