A man who threw his mobile phone, hitting his wife in the head, has been fined.

Stephen Cannon, of Westhill Avenue, Castletown, admitted an offence of common assault and was was fined £100 and ordered to pay £125 costs.

Prosecutor Rebecca Cubbon told the court that Cannon’s partner called police to Westhill Avenue on October 8.

She said she had been assaulted by her husband after he threw his phone at her and it hit her in the head.

He had then left the property but was found by police nearby.

Cannon, aged 40, admitted the offence to police, saying: ’I was stupid.

’I threw my phone at my wife and it hit her head.’

When interviewed, Cannon told police he had been upset because he thought issues had been resolved regarding them separating.

He said he had thrown the phone recklessly rather than intending for it to hit her.

Advocate Stephen Wood entered a basis of plea in which Cannon repeated that he had not intended to hit his wife with the phone.

Mr Wood said: ’She sustained a knock to the head which later turned into a bruise.

’We accept we are dealing with domestic violence but in my submission, the injury sustained was not the most serious that this court has dealt with previously.

’We are not saying that to lessen the culpability but I don’t think I have had a more remorseful person in the cells.’
