A 40-year-old man has admitting trying to bring £131,000 worth of cannabis to the island in the post.
Mario Maou, of Eversley Road, Upper Norwood, London, was staying at a Douglas hotel when a package intended for him was intercepted at the Isle of Man post office.
He admitted offences of attempting to possess cannabis with intent to supply and being concerned in the production of cannabis to the island.
Prosecutor Barry Swain told the court how Maou has an ’extensive record’ but little that was drug-related.
On July 31 Maou checked into the Town House hotel on Loch Promenade.
He told the manager he was expecting a package but that it would be addressed to ’Martin’.
But after his request aroused suspicion, the parcel was intercepted at the Isle of Man post office and found to contain 6.5 kilograms of cannabis with a street value of £131,750.
Mr Swain said there may be further charges as police have stated a second package is also expected to arrive.
The prosecutor said the case was not suitable for summary court and should be committed to the Court of General Gaol Delivery for sentencing. Advocate David Clegg said he could not argue the case should not go to the higher court. There was no bail application.
Magistrates remanded Maou in custody until Friday (August 9) when he will make his first appearance at the Court of General Gaol Delivery.
