A 28-year-old man has been fined £300 after breaking a pub door by kicking it.

Callum Thomas Radcliffe, of North Shore Road, Ramsey, admitted criminal damage and was also ordered to pay £60 compensation to the George Hotel in Castletown.

A second separate charge, of disorderly behaviour on licensed premises at Jaks, was withdrawn after the court heard that the witness in that case had left the island due to concerns over their status after Brexit.

Radcliffe had pleaded not guilty to that offence and a trial was due to take place on June 26.

Prosecutor Roger Kane told the court how a guest at the George on February 23 heard a loud bang at 5am.

CCTV footage was later checked and Radcliffe was seen outside kicking the door.

The bolt was damaged and had nearly come away from the door.

A footprint was also visible on the door.

Radcliffe was identified and arrested initially on suspicion of attempted burglary.

When interviewed he told police he had been out with his girlfriend in Castletown and had planned to stay with her.

However, he said he had been asked to leave so he had tried to find a friend he believed lived at the George.

Radcliffe said he had kicked the door trying to get his friend’s attention.

But when police made inquiries the man Radcliffe named as his friend said that he did not know him and that he did not live at the hotel.

Defence advocate Louise Cooil said that her client accepted knocking heavily on the door and kicking it once.

’He left of his own accord, he didn’t have to be removed. The lady who heard the loud bang had gone back to sleep and thought nothing more of it.

’He wasn’t on licensed premises during opening hours so we would ask that a licensing ban is not deemed necessary.’

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes also ordered Radcliffe to pay £125 prosecution costs.
