Police found a man trying to insert a Kinder Surprise capsule containing heroin, cocaine and cannabis up his bottom, a court has heard.

Officers were executing a search warrant at the home of Liam Richard Kaighin when they came across him trying to conceal the drugs.

Kaighin, aged 42, of Empire Terrace, Douglas, was fined £400 when he appeared before magistrates last week.

Prosecuting advocate Rebecca Cubbon told the court that police executed a search warrant at Kaighin’s home on September 4 at 2.05pm.

He was seen trying to conceal the Kinder Surprise, which was found to contain two grams of heroin worth between £250 and £500, 0.6 grams of cocaine worth £60, and 3.6 grams of cannabis worth £22.

A further search of his home found more heroin worth £25 and more cannabis worth £39.

Also found was £435 in cash, scales and snap bags.

When interviewed Kaighin was said to have remained silent but handed in a prepared statement saying that the cash found had been earned legitimately.

Defence advocate Jim Travers said: ’It is my submission this was a genuine relapse into a world Mr Kaighin had left behind some 11 years ago.

’He has a proven track record of remaining drug and offence free for 11 years which ought to stand him in good stead today.’

Mr Travers told the magistrates that Kaighin had suffered a catalogue of setbacks, including bereavements which were detailed in a probation report.

’He is extremely remorseful for turning to drugs to deal with a host of personal issues he has faced in recent years,’ said the advocate.

’He purchased the drugs to combat the depressive mood he was experiencing at the time. They were relatively low quantities.’

Mr Travers said that Kaighin hoped to return to employment having been unable to work for nine months due to a slipped disc.

Magistrates ordered him to pay £125 prosecution costs which he will pay, along with the fine, at a rate of £10 per week, deducted from benefits.
