A 22-year-old Laxey man has received a suspended sentence for possession of cannabis and cocaine.

Daniel Luke Maguire, of Glen Road, was sentenced to 16 weeks’ custody, suspended for two years and also ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs.

He admitted possessing £30 worth of cocaine and £92 worth of cannabis at an address in Avondale Road, Onchan, on November 11.

Defending Maguire in court, his advocate Jane Gray said that her client had a history of poor mental health.

’At the time of the offence his mental health was spiralling out of control,’ said Ms Gray.

’Police were initially called because he was acting in a strange manner and described him as "mumbling incoherently".

’Mental health services were involved but not during the last 12 months. He only saw them on three occasions due to him not engaging with them.’

Ms Gray went on to say that Maguire had first become involved with drugs at the age of 12 while he was suffering from depression due to family problems.

He was said to now be engaging with mental health professionals and had stopped taking drugs.

Deputy High Bailfff Jayne Hughes said while passing sentence: ’I’m told you have the support of your family. You should be grateful. Lots of people appearing before me don’t have that support.’

Mrs Hughes added that, given Maguire’s age, his co-operation, and the fact that he was engaging with mental health services, there were grounds to suspend the sentence.

He was sentenced to 16 weeks for cocaine possession and eight weeks for cannabis possession, to run concurrently but suspended for two years.
