A teenager has been fined £250 for modifying the exhaust on his Ford Fiesta.

Caleb Douglas, of Shore Road, Port St Mary, also had his licence endorsed with three penalty points.

Prosecuting advocate James Robinson told the court how police saw Douglas, who is 19, driving the Fiesta on Lord Street in Douglas on November 5 at 10.40am.

They reported that there was excessive noise coming from the car’s exhaust and he was subsequently stopped.

The vehicle was tested by the Public Service Vehicle Examiner, who measured the noise at 104 decibels.

There is no legal limit in the Isle of Man but it was said that a reasonable level is 100 decibels and it is illegal to modify the exhaust.

The Fiesta’s exhaust was said to have been modified with a non-standard rear section and it was insecure.

The court heard that Douglas already had six points on his licence.

Defence advocate Kate Alexander said that the facts were accepted.

Ms Alexander said: ’It was not a deliberate breach, just ignorance on Mr Douglas’s part.’

The advocate said that her client’s licence was important to him as he made deliveries as part of his job and he was now driving a different vehicle.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes also ordered Douglas to pay £50 prosecution costs, which he will pay along with the fine at a rate of £50 per fortnight.
