A 20-year-old man has admitted money laundering after he was caught trying to send £2,510 in the post.

Liam John Wilson, of Hillside Avenue, Dogulas, pleaded guilty to attempting to remove criminal property from the island and will be sentenced at the Court of General Gaol Delivery on November 6.

Prosecuting advocate Rebecca Cubbon told the court that Wilson went to FCX cargo handling at the airport on September 3 and handed over a package to be sent to an address in Stoke-on-Trent.

When asked what was inside he said: ’Cards and stuff.’

Staff said he appeared nervous and anxious so they were suspicious about the package’s contents and contacted police.

When opened the parcel was found to contain a protein powder tub which had been opened and resealed. Inside the tub was a vacuum sealed package containing cash.

Wilson was arrested at his home and at police headquarters answered ’no comment’ to all question during an interview.

Ms Cubbon said that the case would have been suitable for summary court sentencing but a confiscation order could only be made at the higher court.

Magistrates agreed that they would not have committed the case if it were not for the confiscation order and this will limit the sentencing powers at the higher court.

Defence advocate Kate Alexander said that a basis of plea would be entered for Wilson before sentencing and asked for a probation report to be prepared.

Wilson also pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis valued at £5.71 which was found on him on September 15.

Magistrates fined him £300 for that offence and ordered him to pay £125 prosecution costs which he will pay at a rate of £10 per week, deducted from benefits.

Bail was granted in the sum of £500 with conditions that Wilson live at his home address and contact probation.
