A Douglas man has been banned from driving and fined £800 for drink-driving.

Sam Greasley, of Linden Grove, was charged after a blood test produced a result of 98 - the legal limit is 80.

The 22-year-old, who works as a machinist, admitted the offence and was banned from driving for one year with an order to retake his test at the end of the ban.

Prosecutor Barry Swain told the court how Greasley was stopped by police at 3.25am on April 21 on Glencrutchery Road while driving an Audi.

He failed a roadside breathalyser test and was taken to police headquarters.

Once there, the intoxiliser machine was not working so he provided blood which later, after analysis, produced the 98 result.

Defence advocate Louise Cooil said: ’When asked if he had consumed alcohol Mr Greasley volunteered the information that he had done so in the last 30 minutes.

’It was an impulsive and stupid decision that he did not think through.’

Ms Cooil said that Greasley had been on a night out with his girlfriend before arguing at her home.

’Without thinking rationally he decided to drive home. He isn’t a young man who goes out and drinks irresponsibly,’ said the advocate.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes also ordered Greasley to pay £125 prosecution costs.
