A woman was twice the drink-drive limit when she was stopped by police, after drinking the night before.

Karan Crennell, aged 46, of Willaston Crescent, Douglas, admitted failing a breathalyser test with a reading of 72 - the legal limit is 35.

She was banned from driving for two and a half years and fined £1,000.

Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes told Crennell: ’Perhaps this is a salutary lesson for anyone who might feel they are fit to drive having consumed alcohol the night before.’

Prosecutor Hazel Carroon told the court how, on October 20 at 12.18pm, police were called to Victoria Road in Douglas after a report of a woman smelling of alcohol leaving Shoprite and getting into her car.

She was stopped by police on Victoria Road and said to be unsteady on her feet. Crennell failed the breathalyser test and was subsequently charged.

Defence advocate Peter Taylor said: ’This is a case of still being over the limit the morning after when choosing to drive.

’Ms Crennell had been out for her brother’s birthday the evening before.

’She woke up the next morning and by lunchtime felt okay to drive.’

Mr Taylor went on to say that there had been no poor driving and that his client had not been stopped for that reason.

’She has to accept she got it wrong and was still over the limit,’ said the advocate.

’There will be a high price to pay.

’She accepts she is going to lose her licence and receive a quite substantial fine.’

Crennell must retake her test at the end of her ban and pay £125 prosecution costs.
