A roofer who was sentenced to community service for causing the Mount Murray fire has been jailed for three months after an appeal by the Attorney General’s office.
Roy Michael Cross, pictured, was originally sentenced to 240 hours of community service and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £2,400, after a jury found him guilty of three health and safety failings.
Trading as Roofcraft on November 7, 2013, Cross and two of his employees were working on the roof of the hotel and country club in Santon when a blaze broke out while they were using a blowtorch to dry damp plywood.
A witness reported that the surface caught fire very quickly and the flames spread rapidly. Between £15 and £17 million of damage was caused.
Cross was sentenced to community service by Deemster Dermot Main-Thompson in January.
But on Tuesday the Attorney General’s Chambers was successful in quashing the sentence, at a hearing in front of Judge of Appeal Geoffrey Tattersall and Deemster David Doyle, and Cross was re-sentenced to jail.
