A teenager has been fined £550 for careless driving and not displaying a ’R’ plate.

Jake Marcus Hosking-Legat also had his licence endorsed with six points and his ’R’ plate period extended by nine months.

Prosecuting advocate Roger Kane told the court that the 17-year-old was driving a Ford Fiesta on August 14 at 8am on his way to work.

He was heading past the Halfway House travelling from Peel to Douglas when a witness said that he overtook her with a lorry coming the other way.

She said that she had to brake heavily in order to let him pull back in and avoid a head-on collision.

The woman said that he was also not displaying a ’R’ plate on the back of the car.

Hosking-Legat, who lives in Corrin’s Way, Peel, was interviewed by police on August 30 and said that the plate must have fallen off when he was washing the car.

Defence advocate Paul Glover asked for credit to be given for his client’s guilty plea and said that there was a ’R’ plate on the front of the vehicle.

’There was no collision, the car is fully licensed, taxed and insured, and there was no suggestion of him being intoxicated,’ said the advocate.

’He needs his licence to get to and from work and college. He is a young inexperienced driver who has learnt a valuable lesson.’

Magistrates fined him £350 for careless driving and £200 for the ’R’ plate offence.

He was also ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs.

He will pay the fine and costs at a rate of £100 per month.
